Howard Lake

In my research I noticed different names for this lake. 2015 Nov, the name of this lake just north of Highbridge Ranger Station was changed. The US Board on Geographic Names finally agreed to rename Coon Lake and Coon Creek to Howard Lake and Howard Creek after the WA Governor, both WA Senators, three WA Congressmen, and fifty state legislators signed a letter calling for a rename. The National Park had assumed the name was short for Raccoon, but the owner of a cabin at Stehekin expressed concern that the name had more to do with the fact that Willson Howard, a miner who had a cabin near the lake in the 1890’s, was an African American man.

His registered mining claim is just a few steps off the trail on the south side of the lake. 48°23'11.00" N, 120°50'6.06"W

Another name change happened June 2023 - WA State Board of Natural Resources renamed five geographic features that were previous named "Squaw". One of those features is a lake very near the PCT on a popular access trail at Cathedral Rock.
