Indian Racetrack

(mm 2204.3) Less than a mile after northbound hikers pass next to Red Mountain and enter the Indian Heaven Wilderness Area, they will reach the intersection with a spur trail that heads west. Only a half mile down that spur trail hikers will find themselves at the starting line of a Native American race track. Ponies were raced on this 2,000' long track.

This was an annual gathering place for Native Americans until the early 1900s. From eyewitness reports, we know that thousands of people from the Yakama, Klickitat, and Columbia River tribes would gather here each year. Not only was this a good huckleberry site but it was located along a historic cross-Cascades route that was used for trade. Indian Racetrack Indian Racetrack Indian Racetrack
