Public Transit to Cascade Locks

This content was last updated on 2025 March 25th

This page is just for people heading to Cascade Locks (including Bridge of the Gods and Trout Lake). There is another Public Transit page that covers transit to other PCT trailheads in Washington. The easiest way to travel is to get another hiker or trail angel to give you a ride the entire way. You can connect with private drivers on the Facebook Group PCT Washington Trail Angels. Taxi, Uber, or Lyft are not options except near the airport.

From Portland Airport (PDX)

Follow signs to gate B6 and the TriMet light rail station. Take the MAX Red Line to the Gateway Transit Center. It runs every 15 minutes.

To Cascade Locks (I-84)

At the Gateway Transit Center in Portland, get on the Columbia Gorge Express route run by Columbia Area Transit (CAT). CAT busses are purple and white. That route terminates at the Columbia Market in Cascade Locks. The bus will drive Interstate 84 along the south shore of the Columbia River. Columbia Gorge Express

To Washington (WA-14)

From there it's a 0.2 mile walk south on US-30 to the Oregon side of the Bridge Of The Gods. Because there is no sidewalk on the bridge or shoulder of any kind, I recommend you stand at the entrance to the Bridge of the Gods Trailhead parking lot hitch a ride across to Washington (you will see what I mean when you are there).

Another option in the Columbia River Gorge area is Gorge Taxi based in Hood River, OR (541) 399-5060.

To Trout Lake

The Trout Lake Trail Angels offer shuttle rides between Trout Lake and the Williams Mine Trailhead on FR 23. They can also assist with transit between Trout lake and Bingen/White Salmon.

via Train

AmTrak's Empire Builder train will take you from the Portland Airport to the Bingen-White Salmon station (BNG), which is part of the way to Trout Lake. It runs once daily at 11:10 AM.

via bus

The same Columbia Gorge Express will take you to Hood River, OR. Similar to Bridge Of The Gods, the Hood River Bridge has no sidewalk so, you may want to hitch a ride across the bridge.

Getting off the trail

The trail angel pickup location is where the PCT intersects with FR-23. There is no mobile signal there so you will want to call head from the PCT. If you care going northbound, you can call from Dry Meadows 46.13905, -121.64656 which is 1.84 miles before the pickup location. If you care going southbound, you can call from 4,400 ft near Swampy Creek 46.18119, -121.62423 which is 1.68 miles before the pickup location.
