This page or the entire website can be easily saved to your phone for offline viewing while on trail by following these instructions
This report uses southbound mile marker numbers because by the time northbound hikers get to Washington the snow is melted and trail conditions are well known. The target audience is southbound thru hikers and section hikers. To view southbound mile markers in the FarOut app go to Settings and change the Trail Direction. This does not change the visual orientation of the trail, it just changes the mile marker numbers.
Access Roads and Trails
Exit/entry to Section K is very limited this year. The current status of the major access roads and trails can be found here Access Roads and Trails
Creek crossings
The creek crossings are listed here and also on the Challenging Creek Crossings page. That page also has advice on crossing and alternate routes if you do not want to cross.
Fires
There are no fires within 10 miles of the PCT at this time. Section L may have some haze from fires in Canada and North Cascades National Park. If winds start blowing west then Section I may get hazy from fires in Yakima.
Section L (Canada to Rainy Pass)
-
This section has no significant stream crossings.
-
Sadly, the Slate Peak Fire Lookout collapsed over the winter. So you may see ruins.
-
Hikers near the Canadian border may experience haze from the fire in BC. There are no fires affecting the PCT in Washington. The 6/24 lightning fires are contained as was the Winthrop (Hamilton) fire.
-
Many blowdowns between the Canada border and Castle Pass.
-
[mm 7] Starting from the Canadian border, the first patch of snow is on Devils Staircase. The trail is clear before and after.
-
[mm 11.5] The next snow you will encounter is a single patch on Woody Pass.
-
[mm 13.5] The climb up the north side of Rock Pass is completely clear.
-
[mm 23.5] North of Windy Pass there are scattered snow patches but none on the trail.
-
[mm 33.5] A small patch on the east ridgeline of Cone Mtn.
-
[mm 36, 36.5] Two tenacious snow fields on the east slope of Syncline Mountain.
-
[mm 37.5] The patches at Grasshopper Pass are all but gone and few on the trail.
-
[mm 52.6] !Dangerous washout about 1/4 south of Methow Pass. The North 350 Blades are aware, but I do not think they have assessed the damage yet. I suggest waiting for others hikers to witness yor safe crossing. photo looking northbound.
-
[mm 53.7] Insignificant patches at Granite Pass.
-
[mm 55.25-56] Cutthroat Pass has melted a lot in the past week. There are only the large NE facing patch, and another smaller patch on the pass itself. The descent into Porcupine Creek valley is completely clear.
Section K North (Rainy Pass to NF Sauk River)
-
Trail is snow-free from Rainy Pass to High Bridge and beyond to Vista Ridge. Suiattle Pass is clear.
-
As with past years, some aggressive bear activity has been reported in the NCNP portion of the PCT. These are only black bears.
-
North 350 Blades have been working this section and its clear of windfalls from Rainy Pass to well up into the Agnes Creek valley.
-
[mm 71] A temporary suspension bridge has been installed over Maple Creek.
-
Services in Stehekin are impacted by the December floods. Details are on the Resupply page.
-
[mm 93] There is a PCTA warning that the S. F. Agnes Creek Bridge at Hemlock Camp is out which is odd to me because that bridge was already gone last year. A logjam should make for an easy crossing.
-
Expect hundreds and hundreds of blowdowns From Suiattle Pass to Milk Creek and still more after that.
-
[mm 103] Debris over trail from an avalanche below Plummer Mtn. just before crossing Miners Creek.
-
[mm 119] Insignificant snow patches as you climb up Vista Ridge. One large patch on Dolly Creek (use caution). Small patches until mm 123.25. The steep Milk Creek valley is snow free.
-
[mm 131] Snow again as you get close to Mica Lake which is still remarkably frozen over. Snow ends at mm 133.5 and you won't see it again until Red Pass.
-
[mm 131.75] Mica Lake is just beginning to melt a bit around the edges. Trail is about 80% snow for 1.75 miles from Mica Lake to mm 133.5 No more snow until the climb up Red Pass.
-
[mm 140] Kennedy Creek is rapid so cross with caution and with friends.
-
[mm 143.75] Baekos Bridge is still cracked in half but still in place and usable as a bridge.
-
[mm 148] The last 1/2 miles of the climb up Red Pass is about 50% snow patches. As soon as you are over the pass the snow stops.
Section K South (NF Sauk River to Stevens Pass)
-
You might hit small patches on the NE slope of Kodak Peak and just south of Lake Sally Ann. But effectively there is no snow from Red Pass to Elk Pass in Section I.
-
Stevens Pass is open for summer operations.
Section J (Stevens Pass to Snoqualmie Pass)
-
Completely snow free, even Pieper Pass and the north side of Alaska Mtn.
-
Plan for a lot of windfalls in the north end of Section J.
-
[mm 193] Rockslide across trail just south of Lake Susan Jane (See N350 Blades assessment).
-
[mm 224.5] Waptus River Bridge has washed away. See Creeks.
-
As usual since 2009, there is no bridge at Lemah Creek.
Section I, North (Snoqualmie Pass to Naches Pass)
- Completely clear of snow.
Section I, Mid (Naches Pass to Chinook Pass)
- Completely clear of snow.
Section I, South (Chinook Pass to White Pass)
- Completely clear of snow.
Section H, North (White Pass to Midway)
-
[mm 363.5] You will see but not walk on snow patches for 1/4 mile as you approach the ridge north of Shoe Lake.
-
[mm 372] Snow patches cover maybe 40% of the trail for 1/4 mile from the headwaters of the Clearfork Cowlitz River to where the trail turns S/SE toward Elk Pass. Then the trail is clear to Old Snowy Mtn. You will see the snow will be on the east slope the entire way to Old Snowy.
-
[mm 375.5] Here the Old Snowy Mtn snow patches begin and continue for 1.75 miles to mm 377. Typically hikers avoid late season snow by taking the high route.
-
No snow from mm 377 to Cascade Locks/Bridge of the Gods. That includes Mt Adams and Indian Heaven.
Section H, Mid (Midway to Williams Mine)
- Completely clear of snow.
Section H, South (Williams Mine to Columbia River)
- Completely clear of snow.
